“Mr Gorbachev.. open this gate ” On June 12, 1987, in an effort to have General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev move forward in negotiations about reducing nuclear arsenals, President Ronald Reagan publically challenged Gorbachev in a speech in front of the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin Wall separating East and West Berlin. Negotiations to reduce nuclear arsenals had started in November 1985.
