On October, 16th 1859 abolitionist John Brown attacked the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia in what would be the culmination of his efforts to abolish slavery. Brown had previously led anti-slavery factions during the Bleeding Kansas conflict in 1856. Brown hoped to instigate a slave uprising with Harpers Ferry as the both the headquarters and the supply point for weapons.
