In April 1864 Union General Tecumseh Sherman was ordered to take Atlanta, known as the Entryway to the South. From early May until mid July the Confederate forces were commanded by General Joe Johnston. The armies clashed at battles such as of Rescaca, New Hope Church, and Kennesaw Mountain. In mid-July Johnston was replaced by General John Hood, a much more aggressive commander.
