May 1911 saw the official birth of US Naval Aviation when Captain W. I. Chambers purchased the first two Navy bi-planes. The Navy had seriously thought about use of aircraft in support of naval operations for only 1-2 years before the purchase. In 1910, after the Army bought their first planes from the Wright Brothers, Captain Chambers became convinced that the Navy could use airplanes.
