(dramatic music) - On 30 January 1862, the United States Navy launched its first ironclad war ship, the USS Monitor.
Invented by the Swedish engineer John Erickson, the ship was innovative in its design with much of the ship being below the waterline.
The ship had a heavily armored turret that could rotate nearly 360 degrees, bringing a pair of 11 inch guns to bear on the enemy.
USS Monitor had a crew of 62 men led by Lieutenant John Warden.
The first assignment for the ship came at the Battle of Hampton Roads, a strategic point in the union blockade.
On 8 March, 1862, the Confederate ironclad the CSS Virginia attacked the blockade.
The USS Monitor arrived the next day and battled the CSS Virginia, which was the first ironclad battle in history.
After four hours, both sides arrived at a stalemate, but the US retained control of Hampton Roads.
