Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(dramatic classical music) - The Battle of the Bulge was a massive German counterattack that began on 16 December, 1944.
The attack created 80-mile wide bulge in the Allied Lines.
Through almost two months of the horrific fighting in the coldest weather in Europe in almost 30 years, the bulges eventually reduced.
By 7 February, 1945, the Allied Lines had returned to their original positions when the attack had started.
More importantly, the back of the German Army had been broken, and after a short pause,ú the Allies continued their planned offensive on 8 February, 1945.
The new offensive was part of General Eisenhower's Broad-Front policy to capture the German Rhineland before crossing the Rhine River.
The Rhine was the last major symbolic obstacle into Germany that had not been crossed by enemy forces since the time of Napoleon.
