“Mr Gorbachev.. open this gate…” On June 12, 1987, in an effort to have General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev move forward in negotiations about reducing nuclear arsenals, President Ronald Reagan publically challenged Gorbachev in a speech in front of the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin Wall separating East and West Berlin. Negotiations to reduce nuclear arsenals had started in November 1985.
